About Us

Our story

Hill Country Woodworks was founded in 1976, in the farmland outside Chapel Hill, NC. Housed in what was at one time a gas station, the company has maintained a high standard of quality using modern methods and traditional techniques. Hill Country has been through several sets of owners, each adding to the reputation it has earned. All of the furniture we build is made by hand, start to finish by a single craftsperson. We take pleasure and pride in creating individual pieces that have not only character but immaculate quality.

Co-owners Mark Todd, Will Bucher, and Dave Pearson design and build the furniture, and maintain the reputation Hill Country Woodworks has earned over the past forty years. All three have received advanced training in furniture design and construction. We encourage you to stop by and get to know us, and let us build something that will please you for a lifetime.

All of our furniture is designed and built by hand at our Chapel Hill shop and showroom. We use a combination of time-honored joinery and hand-rubbed finishes to insure our customers receive the highest quality furniture.

Mark Todd has been a part of Hill Country Woodworks for twenty years, during which time he has designed and built countless custom pieces and helped all of our clients feel welcome. Mark was an engineering student at North Carolina State University, and found his way to furniture design after working as an Exhibit Designer in the Raleigh area. His work has been featured in Chapel Hill magazine, and Mark is a member of the Orange County Artist's guild.

Will Bucher became a co-owner of Hill Country in 2008, shortly after graduating from Appalachian State University's furniture design program. Will's expertise in craftsmanship is unparalleled, and can answer any question you might have about woodworking. A Chapel Hill native, he remains a die-hard Tar Heel fan.

Dave Pearson apprenticed with Will and Mark prior to receiving his graduate degree from North Carolina State University, where he focused on ergonomics and furniture design. Dave has worked for several other furniture companies and taught furniture design at Appalachian State just before returning to Hill Country as a co-owner in 2016.

Everyone at Hill Country Woodworks is passionate about building the best possible furniture. We look forward to meeting you and creating something just right for your life.
